Cinco De Mayo Celebrations!

The Albemarle has kicked off May with a load of celebrations for Cinco de Mayo. To start things off, the residents of The Inn had offerings themed around Mexican culture. For our weekly travel class, we looked at Cancun, Mexico and the historic spot of Chichen Itza. We also drew sugar skulls during our weekly art class.

To sum up the week before our Friday Fiesta, we went on a scavenger hunt where residents were invited to wear sombreros while completing funny tasks. Some of the tasks included proposing to our Nursing Home Administrator, Julie Daugherty. Another task was to prank call our Executive Director, Terri Horton. Our residents had to say hello in Spanish to everyone they passed, sing Happy Birthday to a fellow resident, and even sing Feliz Navidad! All of these fun events led up to a heartwarming celebration of our new Director of Nursing, Michele Allen, who recently obtained her bachelor’s degree. This celebration was especially significant since Michele was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments while obtaining her bachelor’s degree. We wanted to recognize her in a special way, so all of our staff lined the halls, while she walked to the graduation song, Pomp and Circumstance. At the end of the hall, our residents waited with somebreros on to hand her a diploma, fresh picked flowers, and a small graduation present for her desk. We are so proud of all her achievements.

To end the week, we kicked back on our patio and enjoyed the warm air and beautiful lighting while listening to the sound of Morris Cardenas, a Spanish guitar player. Our residents were so glad to enjoy the music and feast on delicious empanadas and chips and salsa.
