“I didn’t know that they have places like this. I really didn’t. They have all these wonderful classes. And beautiful places to walk and not have to worry.” – Julia Jones, resident of The Fountains at The Albemarle

You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. Born in Rocky Mount, Julia grew up in Scotland Neck. She met her husband Sid at East Carolina. They raised three kids and lived in Charlotte for 47 years. There, Julia volunteered five days a week at a local hospital. She and Sid loved seeing shows, going to Panther games and spending family time at their beach house in Duck and Nags Head. Julia never imagined herself living in a small town like Tarboro but she has come to savor it. Now that Sid’s gone, she’s also embracing a life of her own. She gets up early, enjoys coffee and breakfast with other early risers, goes for walks, takes classes, watches movies, joins games and looks forward to socializing every night at dinner.

If you haven’t spent proper time exploring today’s full range of options for living life to its fullest, it’s about time you got better acquainted. Julia Jones had never set foot in a retirement community before her husband suddenly needed round the clock nursing care. Fortunately he received that care at The Springs, the Medicare-certified Skilled Nursing neighborhood of The Fountains at The Albemarle. She moved here from Charlotte to spend time with him every day until his final day arrived. So taken by the love and support they both received at The Fountains, she’s now paying it forward, finding new purpose welcoming neighbors and making them feel right at home as she does. In fact, now that Julia’s experienced life in a vibrant community of friends, she can’t imagine living more fully anywhere else. “It’s not retiring from life, you know.” – Julia Jones

Before she moved into her apartment at The Fountains, Julia was fearful about moving to a retirement community. She imagined there’d be nothing to do but eat and sleep. Now that she knows better, she couldn’t be happier. Her days are filled with purpose and her spirits are high. She shudders to think how miserable she would be living alone back in Charlotte and admits she’d be “bored to death” living with family. For Julia and her neighbors at The Fountains, living independently means calling your own shots in a supportive, community setting. “I think you should have a life of your own. Here I have a life of my own.” – Julia Jones

Julia’s not the only one living worry free in her family. Her three children can also rest easy knowing their mother is secure and thriving among friends. She didn’t even bring her car with her to The Fountains. With convenient transportation provided, she feels she doesn’t need it. “Living in the city you have to worry about this and that but you don’t have to worry here and you have people to walk with and just friends. I mean I’ve never had so many friends, goodness.” – Julia Jones
